Starcraft evolution: One point of Starcraft history

Many of us like to watch historical movies. About Romans, prehistorical people, great world battles etc. We like to see how it was before and we compare it to today.

Even history of Starcraft is pretty reach starting from version 1, the major thing we remember is that Blizzard managed to balance three races which live, work, fight and operate on three totally different concepts. All other strategy games these days mostly offered only different graphics, names and colors for different sides in battle, so they didn't have tough time doing any ballance. Starcraft 1 was strategy game revolution. Starcraft 2, as long awaiting sequel, was expected to be better then first one. Graphics are normaly better, animations and effects rocks. But main concern of everyone was a game ballance. Blizzard took this seriously, as they understand that balance is in numbers. So, the beta release was the best thing they can do to get those numbers in large ammounts...

Even we individualy can protest about some balancing issues it is only because of individual playing style. if you play bad it may look like game is inbalanced in favor of one race. But when tens of thousands games are played daily by more and less experienced players the only real balance marker is to get all race pairs to have total statistic results as close as possible to 50-50. We all see that they are successfull at that.

Starcraft 2 beta was released in february 2010. So, it lasts for 3 months now. I am in beta for a month so I cannot tell how Beta was looking like at start. But, on Blizzards YouTube channel I found some interesting HD video presentations made by Blizzard itself.

One of them I'm presenting here : Starcraft 2: Terran Gameplay.

The storyline tells everything about how Starcraft is imagined to look like before patches started to tweak the game, at least from Terran point of view. If you didn't sneak at this before, try now. You will see some weapons and abilities that doesn't exists in todays terran bases. Sure it would be great to have them now, but...(sigh). I guess Terran was too strong these days, but it was the beta start, and the primary goal of beta is to balance the game. Compare the terran 3 months ago in this movie. Maybe you will like the balance changes and maybe not. The terran game play is presented in TvT environment, on the rock-scissors-paper manner.

Second movie is about Protoss, presented as PvT battle. Realy nice. Here you can also see how things were different. Also I am amazed with the Prottos ultimate game winner - Mothership. Comparable to nothing else, with Matrix like abilities, and devastating laser ploughing on vide area etc. Looks pretty invincible. I am kind of glad that Mothership was nerfed to what it is now (what else you can expect from Prottos enemy? :).

Here it is so sheck it out.

I hope you enjoyed, and that at least one "what if..." bumps to your head :)
